How to Tell if You Need a Car Service and What Causes Low Oil Pressure

Be sure you know what causes low oil pressure in your vehicle so you can be prepared to get it fixed. Knowing how to change your own oil in your car is also important knowledge to have.

What is low oil pressure?

Low oil pressure means that the weight of the engine is bearing down on the oil. In some cases, this can cause a loss of lubrication and the eventual breakdown of an engine. Symptoms of low oil pressure include shaking or jerking while driving, engine temperature rising to abnormally high levels, and a blue smoke coming from the exhaust pipe.

Causes of low oil pressure

Low oil pressure is often the result of a clogged filter, dirty oil, or low air pressure in the system. You can find out if your car needs a service by following these steps:

Why low oil pressure light turns on

Low oil pressure means that the car's engine is not receiving enough oil to function properly. This can happen for a few reasons. The most common are when the oil level is too low or when there is a leak in the oil system. If you notice that your low pressure light is on, it's important to take your car into a service center right away.

Symptoms of low oil pressure

Low oil pressure can cause your engine to stop working. Symptoms of low oil pressure include excessive engine wear, squealing, blowing smoke from the tailpipe, and a knocking sound coming from the engine.

How to solve the problem

If you notice that your oil pressure gauge is on the low side, turn off the engine and let it cool. With the engine off, check your oil level and add oil if necessary, then restart and see if there's improvement. If the pressure remains low, you'll need to take your car to a mechanic for repairs. If you don't want to do this yourself, call YourMechanic and we'll send out a mobile technician to repair your car at home or work.
